On a cabin suitcase, the gap between “somehow stuffed in” and “packed professionally” is easily 40 percent of the volume. Pack with a system and you travel carry-on only, where others pay for a checked bag. Here is how, step by step.
Step 1: roll instead of fold — most of the time
T-shirts, jeans, knitwear: rolled tightly, they form compact parcels that stack against each other without gaps and barely crease. The exceptions are shirts, blouses and jackets — those should be folded, with tissue paper or a T-shirt as a crease guard, and go on the very top.
Step 2: sort by category into packing cubes
The biggest lever for order: compression packing cubes in four sizes — one each for tops, trousers, underwear and socks. The zipper runs all the way around and compresses each cube down to as little as 40 percent of its height, and at the hotel the cubes go straight onto the shelf instead of into chaos. Nothing shifts, nothing has to be refolded.
Step 3: vacuum the volume hogs
Sweaters, down jackets, bathrobes — anything that is mostly air goes into a vacuum bag. With the pump or a household vacuum cleaner, the volume shrinks by up to 80 percent in 10 to 15 seconds. A winter coat ends up as flat as a book. Important: vacuum bags save space, not weight — the airline limit still applies.
Step 4: heavy at the bottom, fragile in the middle
Shoes and the toiletry bag belong on the wheel side of the case so the centre of gravity is right when you pull it. Electronics and breakables go in the middle, cushioned by layers of clothing. In the Altair Original Cabin the adjustable divider system keeps both halves under tension — even if the case ends up on its edge, everything stays where you put it.
Step 5: the 10-second weight check
Hang it on the digital luggage scale once before you leave: if the case is under 8 kg, the walk to the gate is a relaxed one. With many airlines, excess baggage costs more than the scale does.
The pro checklist to take with you
- Roll clothing, fold delicate items
- Categories into packing cubes, compress the zipper
- Vacuum anything bulky
- Heavy towards the wheels, fragile in the middle
- Liquids within easy reach for security
- Weigh it — then head for the airport
With this system, 36 litres of cabin volume becomes a full week of travel — with no sitting on the lid.
