It is one of the oldest debates among travellers: rolling suitcase or backpack? The honest answer is — it depends on the trip. Here is a level-headed decision guide, without the ideology.
When the rolling suitcase wins
For most trips, a rolling suitcase is the more comfortable choice:
- Air travel and city breaks: on the smooth floors of airports, stations and hotels, the weight rolls along beside you effortlessly — your back and shoulders stay free.
- Crease-free clothing: in a hard shell such as the Altair Original Cabin, shirts and jackets lie flat and protected — in a backpack they inevitably get rolled and squashed.
- Protection: aluminum shields a laptop, camera and souvenirs far better than any fabric wall. And a TSA lock secures the contents — a backpack zipper is open in seconds.
- Weight without effort: from around 8–10 kg upwards, every backpack becomes a burden. A suitcase rolls 15 kg just as easily as 5.
When the backpack wins
- Many changes of location, little infrastructure: cobblestones, stairs, buses, beaches — where wheels fail, your back carries.
- Both hands free: with children, tickets or a coffee in hand, a backpack is unbeatably practical.
- As a second bag: most airlines allow a “personal item” under the seat in front alongside your carry-on — the signature discipline of the Altair travel backpack.
The third option: the holdall
For weekend trips by car or train, a soft bag often beats both: the Altair leather travel bag adapts to any boot, looks good at the hotel and is packed in seconds. For 48 hours you rarely need wheels.
What frequent travellers actually do
The most experienced solution is not an either-or decision but the duo: cabin suitcase plus a slim backpack.
- The suitcase carries clothing, shoes and the toiletry bag — everything you only need once you arrive.
- The backpack carries the laptop, documents, power bank and valuables — everything that has to be within reach in flight.
- At the airport the backpack rests on the suitcase (trolley sleeve); on the last stretch to the hotel it goes on your back.
The decision matrix
- ✔ Flight + hotel + city → rolling suitcase
- ✔ Backpacking, island hopping, rough terrain → backpack
- ✔ Weekend by car or train → holdall
- ✔ Business travel, long-haul, frequent flying → suitcase and backpack as a duo
